Williamsburg, NY – Myrtle Avenue to Close, But Not for Disaster

    20

Street festivitiesWilliamsburg, NY – Myrtle Avenue may have recently endured a building collapse, evacuations and all the attendant hassles. But later this summer, the street will be blocked off and filled with crowds and noise for a much more benign cause: Every Sunday in September, Myrtle will be closed to traffic from Clinton to Emerson as part of the city’s Summer Streets program.

There will be no car horns, gridlock or sirens on September Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., just live music, happy children, athletics and arts and crafts classes.

The Summer Streets program started last year with the closure of a seven-mile stretch of Manhattan, from the Brooklyn Bridge to East 72nd Street, that drew 50,000 pedestrians and cyclists. The program’s popularity led Transportation commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan to expand the program to the outer boroughs.

Vanderbilt Avenue in Prospect Heights and Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg have already been closed every Sunday this month under the program. Other streets to receive the same treatment include Knickerbocker Avenue in Bushwick in July and Fifth Avenue in Sunset Park in August.

What a wonderful idea…they should do this on more of the main streets and invite entertainers and crafts peopole to stree fairs in other neighborhoods. There will be lots of booths set up selling ethnic food as well.

This will effect very badly on drivers from Williamsburg to BP taking the streets to avoid Rush Hour traffic on the BQE.

I hope that all the jewish people on myrtle ave ( between sanford ave. and taafe) will start a hefty campaign against this “toieve”. september is a time when all our kids are already home from camp they should not have to see all this garbage. the hell with bloomberg and his trying to copy the immoralty of the european countries by making bike lanes and fares etc. he is doing all this to look good by the non citizens and he pis*es on us tax payers. the hell with him hopefully sooner then later.

I drive and I walk. I walk for recreation and perceived health benefits but I drive for longer distances when appropriate.
This sickness of closing streets to traffic is absurd. Three have always been street fairs, where some organization got a permit to close the street, paid a small sum, and had NYC spend huge salaries for NYC Police etc. The City lost money, the Org. sold booths and profited and the sleazy booth vendors profited. I will bet most of thse vendors do not really pay tax.
Now NYC is doing this on a weekly basis, involving major streets like Bedford Ave which is used as an alternative to Highways, this is wrong.

Sunday, September 20th is the second day of Rosh Hashanah and Sunday, September 27th is erev Yom Kippur. Either the mayor has no calender or no sensitivity to the most holy days on the Jewish calendar.

Let them do it but move it out of neighborhoods that are predominantly inhabited by religious Jews. The idea is to give people an opportunity to socialize and meet their neighbors so let them take it to a neighborhood that wants it.
