Joining the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty, Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger’s expert ditching of a US Airways jet in the Hudson River Jan. 15 is now featured on New York Waterway harbor cruises.

Placards advertising the 90-minute tour proudly boast, “Now featuring the ‘Miracle on the Hudson,’ ” in addition to other sights. The price is $26 for adults and $15 for kids.

The boats cruise over the spot where Sullenberger put down his Airbus A320 in the frigid January water after its engines were knocked out by geese. The stunning landing saved the lives of all 155 passengers aboard.

“We have a video about how Captain Sully made this miraculous landing. He did something no one ever, ever thought a commercial airliner could do,” tour guide Arthur English said in the opening minutes of a recent tour.

English pointed to the crash site, not far from New York Waterway’s West 38th Street terminal.

But passengers had to wait for the end of the cruise — after they’d already seen some of the city’s other famous sights — to admire a video highlighting the heroism of that day.
Shown at the end of the tour, the tape is a compilation of TV news footage and pictures from that day, and emphasizes the bravery of New York Waterway workers, who were among the first to reach the downed plane and start rescuing people.

“Just like after 9/11, New York Waterway was there,” says the video’s solemn narrator. “All of us must always be vigilant, ready for the worst, and prepared to do our best.”

The company added the video because so many tourists were asking about the incident, said New York Waterway spokesman Pat Smith.

“It was cool,” said Travis Erb, 38, of Los Angeles. “It was good because there wasn’t much left to see on the way back in.”

shhh, don’t let shafran of Agudah hear about this. He would probably rather have a commemoration for (his peer in ethics and integrity) Bernie Madoff!

I could have bought the whole Manhattan Island for $26.00.
What a “highway” (waterway) robbery for a boat ride

I remember that the “miracle on the Hudson” took place during Operation Cast Lead. What’s the connection? The connection is that many people were taking their davening very seriously at that point in time. I had the impression that the Hand of G-d was holding the plane and guiding it down. And that the “good davening” was why. Sully’s a shaliach.
P.S. Elul is coming and coincides with Ramadan. We can learn a lot from how careful the Moslems are to pray. Let’s (me too) do that this coming month.
