1 of the tablets that had been believed lost for decades was discovered earlier this year – carefully wrapped in the building’s cellar.
Both artifacts were created for the synagogue, made of wood and hand-painted, the newly restored tablets were being installed today above the ark that holds the sacred Torah scrolls.
The hand-painted tablets were part of the Lower East Side building when it opened in 1887 to serve Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Both will be put back in place today, a day before the start of Rosh Hashana.
In 1996 the synagogue, which serves Congregation Kahal Adath Yeshurun, was designated a National Historic Landmark.
Most have been a Chasidic Shul
I took the tour of the shul a few months ago, and remember that one of the luchos was missing. Very nice.
