State officials say the goal is to reduce accidents from distracted driving.
The new law, however, is considered a secondary offense, meaning the driver must have committed a primary offense — such as speeding, disobeying a traffic signal or other violation — in order to receive a ticket.
The law doesn’t forbid the use of GPS devices and you can still use hands-free phones.
Violators face fines of up to $150.
they should ban pedestrians texting while in crosswalk!
Good. It is insanely dangerous. Anyone who texts while driving shows a criminal disregard for the lives of others and felonious stupidity.
You’re gonna see much less comments on this blog now ,oy vey . BTW this is a great law that is well overdue
Another infringement on our liberty and freedom for the purpose of raising revenue and lining the pockets of the corrupt politicians.
cant give my u my comment im driving!
the the goal is, bloomberg to make more $$$ ,im not saying its not danger”s but when u look over all the pict. its all about ticketing u $$$$ “VOTE OUT BLOOMBERG”
a law without any teeth. how are they to enforce it when a primary offence must be committed first?
I like this law but I really hope they won’t abuse it because even the cell phone law is abused terribly, meaning they give u tickets when in fact u didn’t talk on ur phone. Its very hard to fight tickets like that.
Baruch Hashem! as a pedestrian, i cant tell you how many times i have almost suffered at the hands of idiot drivers looking at their fones instead of the road. it happened just last night, some young yeshiva guy stalled in a crosswalk while playing with his farshtukineh cellphone
if you are allowed to make a call on speaker then how do they know you are not doing just that?? not texting…
I am embarassed to be associated with som many people who fail to see the good in asuch a measure. if it bothers you so much the very simple thing to do is to be a courteous and safe drivier and not do things like texting while driving which has cost people their lives. watch dsome of the dramatic videos to understand. you think the city does this to raise revenue? GOOD you deserve to pay a knas for not only being stupid, but by being selfish inconsiderate person who has a a DIN ROTZEIACH.
if you sdont want to get a ticekt and pay money to the city, all you have to do is obey the rules which are there for your own safety as well. Unimarthem meod es nafshoseichem.
dont be an idiot.
Its ridicules its unbelievable how money hungry this mayor is. I work all day in the car I eat breakfast drink my coffee reading and sending emails talking on the phone and use my knees to hold and steer the steering wheel. Before I start writing or reading I would assume how far the car in front of me is and accordingly adjust my speed and with law I won’t be able to work and waste a lot of time people should have a choice in living their life
this is a great law . i can just tell you that loads of bus drivers both city, interstate and school bus drivers will be hit big time for this . there is no excuse for it
there are many things that are done while driving that shouldnt be . i have seen men shaving , women putting on makeup.
people eating with a fork or spoon. if they hold the container with one hand and the fork with the other, what are they driving with?
smoking should be illegal when driving as well.
