He keeps the key ring on his pinky, thereby reducing the number of times he has to reach into his pocket and saving precious seconds on the routAt Christmastime, he stays out of sight of children while delivering boxes containing toys.
But ask the man in brown how he became New Jersey’s Safest UPS Driver, and Lodovico — who has gone nearly 40 years and 1.5 million miles without an accident — struggles to come up with a secret.
Could it be his almost fanatical attention to safety, including the defensive driving philosophy, the frequent tapping of the horn while backing up and the constant checking of tire pressure?
Could it be the exercise and diet regimen that keeps Lodovico looking more than a decade younger than his 68 years?
Could it be good luck during a career in which he has logged enough miles to make three round-trips to the moon?
“I don’t think I’m any better than anyone else here,” said Lodovico, who works out of the South Jersey city of Vineland. “They’re all good drivers. We’re all taught defensive driving. If you’re not always on the defensive, you’re going to have a problem.”
