Brooklyn, NY – Solar power car guy is just waiting for customers

One full charge for the electric car yields roughly 100 miles of driving in the city. [The Brooklyn Paper / Stephen Brown]Brooklyn, NY – Finally there’s a way to get around town without polluting or burning anything.

The Beautiful Earth Group, a Columbia Street “green” energy company, has set up Brooklyn’s first solar power array for the express purpose of charging electric cars.

Too bad there aren’t many electric cars to take advantage of the cost-free, pollution-free, guilt-free service.

“I spend a lot of time [in the charging station] thinking about the sun,” said Lex Heslin, president of the company and, for now, the sole user of the clean charging station. “The sun is so far away, yet it powers my car. It still amazes me.”

Heslin owns an electric Mini Cooper. The charging station — which cost $25,000 and is fabricated out of two shipping containers — is only the 10th of its kind in the world.

Someday, such “filling” stations could be a model. Now, they’re a novelty.

Only a handful of electric cars are in use around the city, part of a tri-state area “fleet” of just 300, Heslin said.

And, yes, the power is free, but it takes three hours to fully charge Heslin’s Mini Cooper — so if you’re one of those people who feel that time is money, slo-mo refueling is probably not for you.

His efforts at tikun olam are a real kiddush hashem and should be a shining light to others rather than the daily stories we read here about yiddeshe companies and mosdos trying to evade the environmental laws and stealing from other yidden and the public.

Electric vehicles make some sense for buses or local light delivery fleets on fixed routes, folks with short commutes who don’t otherwise use their cars, etc. If you live in Monsey and commute to the city or you want to go to Brooklyn to help your children when they call, an electric car probably won’t work for you. I have some questions about the charging station.
    1. how many cars can it serve at one time?
    2. Does the charging time increase proportionately for charging multiple cars?
    3. Is it intended for commercial service or is it intended for sale to electric vehicle owners?
    4. Is their an alternate source of electricity for charging at night or on cloudy days? If so, what is it?
And, finally 5. Given our current knowledge of geoscience, why on earth should anybody bother with this “green” nonsense?

Reply to #1 : The Tikun Olam of the overwhelming majority of frum yidden and mosdos is a great kiddush Hashem. Unlike the actions of secular humanists who worship themselves and the planet earth thus denying the creator and pushing away his presence which is the opposite of tikun olam.

Hey #1 . Did you know that Lithium Batteries are not really the answer? Lithium must be mined in the Indian Territory of Bolivia. The Indians are angry that the Lefty Environmentalists in the USA want to take over their land and destroy it to exploit their Lithium deposits. There is not too much of it there anyway, so they know you just want to ruin their earth and run away. Why don’t you get a degree in chemistry and experiment so we can benefit from a really environmentally clean and safe source of energy. Oh I forgot. You don’t want to study hard. It’s not fuzzy and warm.

The Lubavitcher, an engineer by training, spoke strongly about the need to develop solar energy 28 years ago.

Thank you #’s 10 & 11, you prove my point.
Ba Chavakuk vehemidon al achas, Tzadik be’emunaso yichye. Ba Modern Orthodox … dina demalchusa dina. Ba Secularists & Reformers etc. … Tikun olam. That’s their only Mitzva so they specialize in it and elevate it above all others!
p.s. #10 , by your denigration of Torah study you reveal yourself for the apikorus that you are!
After the Bais Hamikdosh was destroyed Chazal say Hashem only has the 4 amos of halacha, i.e. Limud haTorah which brings Hashems presence into this world which helps solve the problems humanity faces, i.e. “Tikun Olam”.

I hope this comes out 1 day on all cars, this expensive gas is rediculous and I hope they come out with spare battries that if somebody has low battery on the way he shouldn’t be stuck, he should be able to change the battery and go furthur…
