“We’re proud, very happy, very excited,” said proud mom Brucha Strulevich, who hasn’t even picked out a name for the third addition to her family of all boys.
Following Jewish Orthodox tradition, the child will be named at his Bris.
The baby boy was delivered at Mount Sinai Hospital, which almost had the first baby of the year in 2006. That child arrived at 11:59 and 48 seconds, 12 seconds early.
“It was a very pleasant surprise,” said Doctor Michael Silverstein, who delivered the child.
Both baby and mother are doing fine.
The little bundle of joy weighed in at just 5 pounds, 1 ounce.
But, the family said the timing of the arrival was big surprise, especially for mom.
“We didn’t expect the baby to be the first baby of the year,” she said smiling.
So what do you get for being the first baby of the new year? The first baby of the new decade?
Bragging rights, and a made in NY onesie from the mayor.
Mazel Tov
If the baby was born a couple of seconds earlier they could have had another deduction for 2009.
Haha!!! Dr Michael Silverstien is an amazing doctor, he deliverd both of my kids, I am tickled that he was the one to deliver the first baby of 2010 inNYC. very good!!! whoever this Mrs Strulowitz is, she should have a lotta nachas!
Its very nice but our year started a few months ago – another goyish inyan
I remember my accountant once telling me that up to some time into the new year you can still count the baby as a deduction
I know the father from the baby his name is moshe strulowitz he is one of the owners of “tri state fireproofing” MAZEL TOV Moshe u should see a lot of nachas
My grandson was born Erev Yom Kippur. Very convenient for my daughter so she didn’t have to fast.
I was by the Shulem Zucher of this baby boy, the son my friend Moshey Strulowitz which took place in the big Satmara Shul on Hooper St. In Williamsburg. Everyone was talking that a few seconds earlier he would make a few more dollars in tax return… (Btw he didn’t think of being the 1st baby till everyone in the hospital was busy with it)
Should he & his wife have lots of Nachas from this one & the other 2 & other Iy”h.
Moshe!!! Lots of nachas!!!
Oh Moshe… You made it!!!!
After being in the delivery room 7 times, bli ayin horah, one of the things I’ve noticed is the inaccuracy of the time of delivery. In each delivery the time was between 45 seconds and 2 minutes after the actual delivery. The doctor is understandably busy with the situation at hand for a few minutes after the birth and then deducts a minute or two from when he finally can look at the clock. No one argues with the doctor’s estimate, but I took note of the exact time, and it was always a bit earlier than the doctor’s estimate (45 seconds to 2 full minutes).
For tax deduction and other financial benefits she should’ve had it put down as the LAST baby of 2009!
Mazel Tov, MOSHE may hashem bless you with all the best.
I know her very well. Mazel Tov! May she have lots of Nachas from this one and her others.
Mazel tov Moshy!! A lot of nachas.
although there may not be a 2009 deduction, but the child gets to say on his parents ins.a year longer when he reaches 23 and thats a bigger savings
Mazel Tov! I’m so glad to hear that Dr. Silverstien had the privilege of delivering the first baby of the new decade!
according to this story – a non jewish baby was first newborn in 2010

Mazel tov bruchy we are overjoyed! I can’t believe it’s you!
Should you always be so excited as you’re now and see lots of nachus of your little tsadikel!!!!!!
Sincerely your BEST BEST FRIEND!
reply to no 10. that is UNTRUE with my doc at Mt. Sinai Hosp. in NYC. My experiences were as follows: as soon as the baby was in the doctors hand he asked the nurse to record the time.
Mazel tov lots of nacas by this child n all other children, should u be zoica to guide them l’torah il’cipa ila’masim tovim!! (that’s the main after all, even if ur the first child born of the year!)
By halacha, a baby is considered born when the head emerges so the time may be a little off.
What am I missing here? “The child arrived at 11:59 and 48 seconds….” Isn’t that the last baby of 2009 rather than the first of 2010?
What difference does it make that it was the first baby of the New Year?
You cant belive anything the media says: i just confirmed that this couple lives in Willy, not KJ, and Dr Silverstien didnt deliver the baby, Dr Rebarber did. Geuss Dr Silverstein was avilable for the cameras the next day and Dr R wasnt.
Dr. silverstein is the best!!!!!
who cares about last baby of 2009 or first baby of 2010? bh the child is healthy! The parents should see alot of nachas from all their children!
