In a comparison of premature deaths, Sullivan came in last among New York’s 62 counties, even lower than the Bronx. It did not fare much better in other categories: it ranked 50th for unhealthy behavior such as smoking and binge drinking and 56th in terms of access to medical care and the quality of that care.
Orange and Ulster counties generally had middling scores, although in two areas of concern, Orange ranked 50th in clinical care and Ulster came in 44th in unhealthy behavior.
The report, one of 50 created by the University of Wisconsin’s Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, allows health officials in each state to compare health measures among neighboring counties.
