On Saturday, Republican Senator Jim Bunning of Kentucky blocked a move to temporarily extend benefits.

Bunning cited the move’s $10-billion price tag.

On Sunday, Republican Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona said on “FOX News Sunday” that he is optimistic that lawmakers will be able to agree on an extension perhaps as early as Tuesday.

“It will pass though because it’s a temporary extension,” Kyl says.  “The question for the longer-term extension is a different issue because that’s well over a hundred billion dollars.”

Some warn that a temporary extension will only create a bigger crisis down the road.

“It’s a whack-a-mole approach and it’s not going to work,” says Kassover.  “It just going to get us into deeper trouble.”

He says he’d like to see more incentives for employers to start hiring again.

New York Senator Chuck Schumer is pushing to give tax breaks to employers for new hires.

Acting New York State Commissioner of Labor Colleen Gardner says, “We will continue to push the Senate until this extension is passed for the thousands of New Yorkers who are about to lose their only means of paying their rent and putting food on their table.  It’s their lifeline.”

I feel bad for those without jobs, but some of they have extended the unemployment checks several times for over a year and at some point, this has to stop. We cannot continue paying money to people not to work. There are always jobs at some lower salary but most don’t want to do the hard work or take positions with very low pay.

If the rest of the Senators (primarily the 55 or so D’s, but also lots of the R’s as well as that I from Ct.) actually got together they could stop this garbage. All they need to do is tell Sen. Bunning that if he’s threatening a fillibuster, he damn well better get up there to the podium and start speaking.
Then the rest of them can start pointing out to the nation that it’s Bunning who’s hanging them out to dry.
The next day there’d be 10 million calls for his resignation.
So why aren’t they doing this? Answer left as an exercise to the student.

This is just outraged to extend again. The unemployment insurace keeps on rising in result of this. Congress should rather do something incentive that employers should star hiring

I can’t speak for every person currently receiving unemployment benefits, but my father has been trying for over a year to get a stable job. He’s worked as a cab driver (not in NY) and as an inventory counter. He’s not afraid to take jobs that will pay more than unemployment, but he’s not young. He can’t do a lot of menial labor anymore. He’s been trying very hard to get anything he can in his field. He lost over 20 years of seniority, and he’s perfectly willing to start on a beginner’s salary if that’s what it takes.

Those of you with jobs have no idea what it’s like. The lack of compassion is absolutely appalling.

How much longer can those of us who are working continue to pay higher taxes to support those that cannot or will not find jobs.

I cant afford to lose my unemployment! I was making good money in my old job and my unemployment check reflects that. The average going rate now is about $9.00 -$13.00 an hour thats about half my previous salary- plus $5.00 for baby sitting and (about)$2.00 for taxes and Im left with (about) $2.00 an hour – how many of you will go back to work for $2.00 an hour when your getting more on unemployment? I need this money for food, clothing for my kids, and rent basic things!

if unemployment is not extended then those WITH JOBS should cut their hours/days to part time and give the other part time work to the UNEMPLOYED. How about sharing in the misery of others who unfortunately CAN NOT find jobs because no one is hiring.

My husband has been out there pounding the pavement for over a year. The ones who are willing to hire wnt to give a job to somebody who is “curren tly working”!! Can you beat that?? The unemployment line will never shrink with employers with attitudes like that!! They want 5 degrees, and want to pay practically nothing.

Where was Jim Bunnings when it came to allocating over a trillion, that’s right, a trillion dollars to Iraq? Why is it that Republicans can find endless amounts of money to build hospitals, schools, and roads for a bunch of ragheads in the Middle East, but they can’t find 10 billion for actual American citizens down on their luck?
Why are they suddenly such “fiscal conservatives” after years and years of wasting our money on their pet projects?
It’s very clear where Jim Bunnings priorities lie: when it comes to enriching his corporate friends with phony wars and fat government contracts, he’s all for copious amounts of spending; when it comes to average hard-working Americans, he could care less. These people have no shame.
