Schumer said Sunday he’s gotten commitments from American, Delta, JetBlue, United and US Air. He reached out to the companies’ CEOs after Spirit Airlines recently announced it would charge up to $45 for passengers who bring a bag on board and put it in the overhead compartment.

The Democratic senator says he hopes other carriers will follow. He says he plans to meet with the leadership of Spirit Airlines in the coming week.

Add-on fees have been an important source of revenue for airlines since oil prices soared to an all-time high of $147 a barrel in July 2008. Those fees became a mainstay for airlines’ bottom lines even after fuel prices plunged.

kol hakauvode to senator schumer for doing these important things for us. i am sure he will reelceted because of this milesone….As for Spirit, they will up the price somemore for travel (even if they lower the bag fare). Oh bye the way, we went to FL last week for $98 a ticket on spirit; american would have been $250 a ticket. With genavous das I would pay the 20 luggage fee.

The truth is that Spirit is niot cheaper. I used to fly them If you got a $10 seat you can add the taz which will make it to $45. You will need to add $20 when you reserve a seat. Suprised they charge you to reserve a seat. The only airline that does that. Your carry on is an additional $25. You are at $85. Add $45 for carry on and your at $130.00.
Saychel tells you Spirit Airlines is a rip off. You have better choices.
By the way their ammenities usually dont work. I have traveled with them several times and the lavatories were eith shut closed or ther was no running water they dispensed toweletts. This is lower than class.

Yakov Schorr, the owner of Spirit, built a beautiful shul in Silve Spring, Maryland with the money he made. I have davened there many times. So let him charge extra. He puts the money to good use.

I used to fly Spirit Airlines all the time but since they started charging for aisle seat, window seat, etc. they are no longer a “metziah.”

Also, one time I got to the airport too late and they would not let me board the flight. They wanted $600 to reschedule for a later flight! I rented a car and drove home.

I agree that they should charge for carry on bags if you don’t like it fly 250,000 miles a year all you ameture flyers are too cheap too pay the checking under fee so cram everything into your carryon bags either don’t fly or earn status.

they will restrict the the size that the carry on can be. currently it can be 45″ and some airlines allow up to 40 pounds. but who knows what will be next.

Lets call a spade a spade and realize that Chuck U Schumer is upset about the lack of taxes coming in to the govt. When Spirit charges $9 a seat, all they have to pay taxes on is the $9. The tax to the govt is MUCH LESS than the airfare tax. The $45 paid to the airline is either not taxed or not taxed as if it was an airfare.

Again, Chuck U Schumer is upset that the govt can’t get ots grubby hands on this money.

There the Democrats go again getting interfering with private enterprise. People are free to choose their carrier. Let Schumer get involved in real issues like rescuing Israel from the rishus in the White House.
