But the construction of the mosque on a site that houses a building damaged by debris from the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centers, is now in jeopardy because the 152-year old structure is being reviewed for city landmark status, the New York Post reports.

The Landmark Preservation Commission told the Post that it has had an application in to make the building a landmark since 1989. A spokeswoman for the commission told the Post that a hearing would soon be held and a verdict rendered.

If landmark status is approved, the Post said it would be unlikely that the building could be torn down and replaced with a new structure.

I didn’t realize that the building was that old. I do remember the creaking stairs when I use to go shopping at Syms there in the 1970’s. That’s when Syms only has top brands at great prices, with an “SSSS” label sewn inside the suit jacket.

Landmark status will only prevent them from destroying the existing structure and replaceing it. However they can still use the footprint of the old structure and build a mosque within the defined paramaters. Personally, I don’t think anyone can stop them. What a Shame.

This is American -“the land of the free!” They have every right to build a mosque anywhere they want legally.
May all Americans see this magnificent mosque and remember every day the Koran which
teaches to “kill the infidels” and what the “Jews are like monkeys”!
Americans deserve this for all the oil wealth we supported them with and these primitive dictatorships we supported. This should be the Monument (a gigantic mosque) for us all to
remember where and who are the largest murderers and terrorists in the world-ISLAM !
tHIS IS THE RELIGION OF ACCEPTANCE OF TODAYS REALITY(NOT EXTREMISM) ALL OVER THE WORLD. aNY DENIAL IS A LIE! These mosues should be built all over the major cdities in the US . We earned it because we are sleeping again!

I don’t see an issue with having a mosque there. But if the building is that old I don’t think they should tear it down. But there’s no reason why they can’t put the mosque in that building.

They have already said they have several other sites under option within a few blocks of this location so if they don’t get to build here they will build somewhere else, which is their right to do. A mosque has the same status as a shul or church and is entitled to the same respect and legal opportunity to build wherever the law allows for religious use.

At the memorial there should be posted large sign “Directions to religion of hate location in the area same religion as terrorist that destroyed the towers”
