TOMS RIVER — A 21-year-old Lakewood man, charged with the abduction and rape of a Lakewood woman in May and the attempted rape of an Old Bridge woman in July, will be tried in both cases in Ocean County, authorities said.

Ronald F. DeLigny, chief assistant Ocean County prosecutor, said Ocean County will prosecute Brandon J. Fritz on both the Ocean Countyand Middlesex County charges because “the state believes there is a common-type scheme or plan with the offenses.”

The abduction and rape of the 20-year-old Lakewood woman, accosted after working out at a Lakewood gym, had galvanized the township’s Orthodox Jewish community. The victim in that case is Orthodox.

In the Lakewood case, the 20-year-old woman was abducted after working out at TrimGym Fitness Center on Madison Avenue, in the rear of ShopRite Plaza, according to the indictment. Her abductor drove her around for about seven hours, raped her in a wooded location and dropped her off in the same place where she was abducted while investigators were still on the scene, the indictment says.

The indictment alleges Fritz, in addition to kidnapping and raping her, also robbed her.

DeLigny would only say that it was a personal item of nominal value that was taken from the Lakewood victim and that a knife was used.

The indictment alleges that the victim was abducted and detained at locations in Lakewood, Jackson and Howell before her abductor let her go. Fritz abducted the victim with the purpose to commit a crime and to inflict injury on her or to terrorize her, according to the indictment.

It alleges that Fritz raped the Lakewood woman during the commission of a kidnapping and while armed with a weapon.

Fritz is being held in the Ocean County Jail to await trial. His bail is set at $1,450,000.

Each of the kidnapping charges carries a maximum prison term of 30 years upon conviction, and each of the aggravated sexual assault charges and the armed robbery charges in the Lakewood case carries a maximum of 20 years
