New York, NY – Mayor David Dinkins encouraged voters to embrace a state Senate candidate because he looks “more like us.”

“It’s important, it is so very important, particularly for the people of this district who vote on Tuesday to recognize how important it is to understand that the city is changing,” Dinkins said in his endorsement of state Senate candidate Assemblyman Adriano Espaillat on Thursday.

“Most people in the city are going to look more like us than others and that’s just a fact,” Dinkins said.

Espaillat opponent Mark Levine, who is white, yesterday called on Espaillat, who is Hispanic, to denounce the divisive comment.

Espaillat did not repudiate Dinkins’ words.

“Mayor Dinkins is one of New York’s finest public servants, and he’s built his career around the principle that communities of different ethnic and economic backgrounds must work together if we want to bring about long-term change,” Espaillat said in a statement.

Levine, who called Dinkins’ comment “insulting to the district and electorate,” also took issue with its timing.

“The fact that they were delivered on the first day of Rosh Hashana added to their inappropriateness,” Levine said.

Espaillat and Levine are both frontrunners in the race to fill Attorney General hopeful state Senator Eric Schneiderman’s seat. The district includes the diverse population of the Upper West Side, Washington Heights, and Inwood, in Manhattan and Riverdale, in the Bronx.

Mr Dinkins remains the same fool that almost destroyed New York. Imagine a caucasian saying such an inane comment. The liberal press would be all over him but because Dinkins is a black, it’s acceptable. At least he didn’t say to vote for people like him , stupid and incompetent, no matter what color the person’s skin is.

So I guess we are NOT to judge them by the content of their character, we ARE to judge them by the color of their skin. That’s too bd because there were far too many people that did exactly that for the 2008 elections & look what we ended up with .

Any candidate who does not condemn such racist and irresponsible comments does not get my vote. It is beyond ignorant to guide someone to vote for a particular candidate because of his looks. When can we return to politics that is based on political views? Dinkins was doing well before he opened his mouth.

Dinkins was the worst mayor in the history of NYC. The fact that he is in denial only proves that he lives in lala land. Anyone who forgets how he hurt this city and how Rudy became the hero cleaning up his mess is as foolish as he is. A politician has to be “color blind” and not color focused. Any white politician that cares more for his caucasian constituents is raked over the coals for being a bigot and a racist. Koch had to lean over backwards, and did, to be fair to ALL New Yorkers, as does every other white mayor of this city.

As Obama has proven when he first apologized to the Arabs for all the former administrations lack of understanding and respect of his “brothers”, he has no business representing Americans, and anyone else who is racially motivated doesn’t either.

Schneiderman’s endorsement, or is it of the 1900 attorney law firm of K & L Gates, a man that as candidate as AG should have stayed neutral has angered me so that all other endorsements have led me to think, “There is another one, if elected, will owe Espaillat a favor or two!”
I never really paid to much attention to Dinkins’s statement! WOW! Everyone is write about if this were a white county democratic chairman endorsing a candidate the wrath of the “Politically and Racially correct world would come crashing down.

Let’s elect Mark Levine and K & L Gates free Kathleen Rice!

this piece of crap, who will always be known as a (black) men’s room attendant( as he was so described in his heyday) let the city burn. The people have to “vent” and remember “whirlpooling, and ” dont dis your sis” these phrases were his (sad) legacy.
what a loser! it should of been him in the box instead of that martyr Yankel Rosenbaum ztl.
He is directly ( or maybe in directly) responsible for yankel’s death.
He let the chayos run wild, and terrorize the city.
the chayos should have met the same fate as those Chinese who also wanted to “vent” at Tinanamen Square. Anyone remember the the end result of that protest?

what do you mean he is a racist. Thats not what its called.
    He is a PUPPET RACIST.
He is a simple man who is put up by others.
    or maybe thats too nice…..

#12 schwartzi …you have a good memory…I remember him showing up in Crown Heights wearing a baseball cap with an X on it…as in Malcolm X (smart move David).
#5 95 +% of people of color voted for Obama because he looked more like them and you are correct…look what it got us.
I would like to know from those of color who gave Obama the vote…what has he done for you so far?
When Al Gore ran with Joe Lieberman, Jews were smart enough to make their decision based on who was right for America rather than vote for one of our own who was on the ticket.
Dinkins should know better than to have made such a racist remark about voting for someone who looks “more like us”.
I agree that had this been a white person making the same remark in reverse then all hell would have broken out in the media.
