New York – A New York politician, expelled by the state Senate after a misdemeanor assault conviction, has been charged by federal prosecutors with funding his 2006 campaign with money that was supposed to go to charity.

Queens Democrat Hiram Monserrate was charged in an indictment unsealed Tuesday with mail fraud conspiracy and mail fraud.
He’s expected to appear in federal court in Manhattan later in the day.
Monserrate was sentenced last year to three years’ probation for dragging his girlfriend through an apartment lobby.
