Now the latest ban being proposed in San Francisco is on male circumcision.
A proposed ballot measure for the November 2011 ballot – when voters will be electing the San Francisco’s next mayor – would amend The City’s police code “to make it a misdemeanor to circumcise, excise, cut or mutilate the foreskin, testicle or penis of another person who has not attained the age of 18.”
Doing so would result in a fine of up to $1,000 and up to one year in jail, according to the proposed measure submitted to the Department of Elections.
The measure was submitted by San Francisco resident Lloyd Schofield, who has spoken up on this issue in the past.
He was not immediately available for comment.
For the ordinance to make it on to the November ballot, it would require the collection of 7,168 valid signatures by April 26, 2011.
It’s unknown if Schofield approached members of the Board of Supervisors asking them to vote on such a measure before deciding to take it to the voters.

San Francisco’s code sets a very low threshold to get a referendum on the ballot. This guy has been pushing the anti-brissin amendment for years and finally got enough signatures. The city is legally obligated to put it on the ballot. If you disagree than simply vote not. Otherwise, the mohels will simply do their thing in Marin county and Oakland. No big deal.

The real problem is those Jewish parents who have already decided that milah is some kind of torture and have refused to have their sons circumcised. They have no idea how many isurim they are oiver, and thay their son is not even considered Jewish until he is given a bris. So when the boy is a young adult and maybe figures out what’s what, then he has to undergo some real pain. A Jewish council should be formed with the power to snatch these babies, give them a bris, then return them. Too bad if mommy and daddy don’t like it.

Actually, Kanoi is right. If a father does not want to keep the Mitzvah of Bris Milah, the Beis Din grabs the child and does it. See Yoreh Deah 261. This case is totally different from tonsils. The Torah is true, and if it tells us to circumcise, that is the right thing to do. Removing of tonsils would be a totally unnecessary act and that is all the difference. However, if Jewish people refuse to present the Torah as the ultimate truth and try to couch our mitzvos in language designed to appeal to a goy, we have ourselves to blame when the Goy doesn’t take us seriously.
