Attorney Ulrich Busch asked today that his 90-year-old client be examined by an orthopedist and an optometrist. Busch says the retired Ohio autoworker is in too much pain and his eyesight is too bad for him to examine documents submitted as evidence.

Demjanjuk is standing trial on 28,060 counts of accessory to murder for allegedly having been a guard at the Nazi’s Sobibor death camp. He denies the charges.

The judge took the motion under advisement but noted the court does not insist Demjanjuk read the documents.

A prosecutor said Demjanjuk seems to read a Ukrainian newspaper regularly with no problem.

The only medical assessment that will matter to everyone here is the one that declares him dead.
