Wild chase unfolds on Thruway
1 of 1 February 01, 2007
A New Jersey man led police on a high-speed chase on the Thruway this morning, weaving in and out of rush-hour traffic and at one point driving north in the southbound lanes.
The hour-long incident began when Newburgh town police Officer Steve Bouffard tried to pull over Jose M. Vazquez, 33, on Route 17K for speeding and possible drug use. Instead of stopping, Vazquez turned onto the Thruway ramp in his 1997 Honda Accord, slowed down to take a ticket at the toll booth, but then ran another vehicle off the road while zipping onto the southbound lanes, according to police.
He drove faster than 90 mph and passed vehicles on the right. On the left. On the shoulder. He even squeezed in between two vehicles.
In the Town of Cornwall, he made a U-turn and drove for several miles against the flow of morning commuter traffic, police said. Cars, SUVs and tractor-trailers had to swerve off the road to get out of the way.
Vazquez swung the Honda onto a shoulder, jumped out into the woods and at one point crossed a stream. Police, including state police who had by this point joined the chase, searched for 45 minutes with the aid of dogs and astate police helicopter.
He was seen around 10 a.m. by two state police investigators who chased him on foot before arresting him.
Police said it appears Vazquez did not want to stop because he had allegedly burglarized a job site earlier in the day. Found in his car were power equipment, a gas-powered pump and a generator.
Vazquez, who is from Newark, N.J., but has a Newburgh address, was charged by state police with felony reckless endangerment and misdemeanor drug charges and fleeing from a police officer. Newburgh police charged him with 12 traffic infractions as well as felony reckless endangerment and criminal possession of stolen property
