New York – Kosher Consumer Alert: Improperly Pasteurized Milk

    25

New York – New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker today alerted consumers that Bethel Livestock Farm, located at 522 Happy Avenue, Swan Lake, New York, is voluntarily recalling certain milk products due to improper pasteurization. Proper pasteurization heats milk in order to effectively eliminate all pathogenic bacteria, such as Listeria and Salmonella.

The recalled milk product is sold under the name Bethel Creamery Pasteurized Whole Organic Milk (Kosher Cholov Yisroel) and packaged in half gallon plastic containers. The recalled products have a use by date of JAN 7 2011 and were distributed to five locations in the Bronx and Rockland County.

Routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets’ Milk Control and Dairy Services Inspectors and subsequent analysis of the product by Food Laboratory personnel revealed the product was improperly pasteurized.

No illnesses have been reported to date to this Department in connection with this problem.

You wouldn’t have this kind of problem with cholov stam…many brands of cholov yisroel are also “machmir” on their pasteurization techniques but this is obvviously an exception

cholov stam is a myth it is a pure abuse of a heter reb moshe a’h once gave as a yotzei min haklal for some one who lived far away and had no access to cholov yisroel

I do find that cholov stam lasts longer than cholov yisrael and I have had to throw out cholov yisrael before it’s expiration date.I’m not sure why that happens, unless it sits on delivery trucks longer than the cholov stam.I’m sure I’m not the only one to notice this.

#14 , depends on where you buy. I’ve found one kosher store, at least, I won’t mention the name but it’s on Avenue U, where milk went bad fast. When I went with my wife to see it, it turns out they left the milk next to the fridge in containers for a while before putting it in.

i dont see the big deal – for thousands of years people drank unpasteurized milk – of course no illness was reported – it is a normal thing to drink – nothing so dangerous about it – just it’s better (i.e. less dangerous) when pasteurized
