Brooklyn, NY – This is my observation of the blizzard snow removal on my block 45 Street between 14 & 15 Avenues Brooklyn, NY:

    Sunday, December 26:
Snow in the afternoon, no vehicle from the department of sanitation to be seen throughout the afternoon or at night.

    Monday, December 27:
Nice sunny and windy, no vehicle from the department of sanitation to be seen throughout the Day or night.

    Tuesday, December 28:
At about 11:00 AM a garbage truck with a driver named Steve (Truck number – BK-18 — 25CW-110—Plate Number R-10525) with a plow entered the block and drove till the front of 1456 where he got stuck, he refused help from bystander and asked “Please do not help me” he sat in the truck until his was over.

At 11:00PM the driver’s changed shifts in the truck that broke down until 2:00 AM. Note: he was fully equipped with food for the day and a computer for entertainment. At 2:00 AM (after 15 hours) a heavy duty tow truck from the DOT Fleet Service (truck number 102 C –Plate Number K-18647) arrived and tried to pull out the garbage truck from the back in the same time a bulldozer with a driver named Willy (truck number 21CB-213 – BK13 –Plate number M-57267) from the department of sanitation arrived and tried to push out the garbage truck from the front after pushing and pulling about 20 minutes they succeeded in freeing the garbage truck. In the same time the bulldozer started skating on the snow and bumped into and damaged a car at his right side. After about a half hour he managed to get out.

    Wednesday, Decmber29:
Looking out my window at about noon I saw assemblyman Hikind walking thru my house, I went out to talk to him, he answered in laughter “the mayor said all is just fine”.

At about 12:30 PM three pieces of equipment from the department of sanitation entered the block. The first was a bulldozer (truck number 21CB-104 –Q lot– Plate Number M-49550) the second one was a garbage truck with a plow (truck number 25DF-144 –BK-12– Plate Number M-70345) the third a salt spreader with a plow (Truck Number 38AA-108 – BK-12 –Plate Number L-75294) the crew had a supervisor with them.

We asked the supervisor about the situation he said “we where all ready and pre positioned but the snow was falling just too fast” as they where pulling thru the block they where blocked by a UPS truck that was stuck towards 14th avenue not allowing the trucks to pass the street. At about 2:30 PM a tow truck from the NYPD (Truck Number PED Brooklyn 6869) backed in from 14th avenue to tow the UPS truck as he was backing in he lost control and called in for backup. At about 3:15 PM a second tow truck (Tuck Number 6815) arrived and tried to tow the first tow truck. As soon as the second tow truck backed into the street it lost grip and the two where chained together and stuck with no way out.

At this point the two tow truck drivers shut their engines one of them took a break by smoking a cigarette. At about 3:45 PM a third tow truck from the DOT fleet (truck Number T363 — Plate Number L34096) arrived the, driver he managed to pull out the second tow truck, and the second tow truck managed to pull out the first tow truck.

Now the time was about 4:30 PM we were back to square one we have A UPS truck stuck with three sanitation trucks behind for four hours. By this time the UPS drivers abandoned the truck and left for the day on their way home. I left the scene, when I returned at 6:30 PM the UPS truck was pulled out and the three trucks behind where freed. Now another bulldozer from the department of sanitation (Truck Number 21B4-025—QS Lots–Plate Number L-54647) started cleaning the street for the first time after the blizzard at about the 7:30 PM he left for day and basically cleared the intersection part of the street.

To summarize it took 78 hours, 12 trained and licensed city employees, 10 pieces of heavy duty equipment, 3 different city departments DSNY, NYPD and DOT to start cleaning 20 plus inches of snow on 45th Street between 14th & 15th avenue but wait they did not finish they just started.

I don’t understand all the attention by VIN to the snow storm. Guess what – snow happens. So do blizzards. And snow fell over the entire north east. And where do we hear all the whining from? New York.

I used to live in Flatbush. I remember the snows and nothing would get plowed.

    Ain Kol Chadash Tachat Hashemesh.

Now I live in Florida with all the displaced New Yorkers.

It was 77 today and it’s going up to 80 on Shabbos.

I’ll through some extra meat in the chullent for you.

Excellent article but doesn’t help much. Please forward it to Mayor to wake him up from his rosy dream.

I watched all of the videos they were great. These videos, testimonies, and dairy should be used as evidence in court of law to convict the derelict employees involved, especially Steve, the one camped out using his computer in his truck. In addition, the leaders of the sanitation department and union should be held responsible for manslaughter and for all financial damages incurred by New Yorkers. If the city allows these low-life, dispicable, etc. degenerates to get away with what they have done the public should storm the sanitation garages in protest and demand justice. We must break-up the sanitation department and union because they have shown that they put their self-interests above the public safety. We cannot rely on such animals in the future. In contrast to the NYDS, the NYPD and NYFD have never placed the public at risk although there were layoffs and low morale in their respective departments. To prevent future actions like these by the NYDS we must impose the most severe punishments to demonstrate that there are consequences for murder and disruption of lives. Zachor, we must never forget and never weaken our resolve to punish these offenders.

#1 , let me try to understand.YOU are the one who runs away to Florida, and you’re laughing that New Yorkers can’t handle snow? That is hilarious!! 😉

But consider what isn’t very hilarious, and actually quite serious, extremely dangerous and even deadly when the city takes no responsibility to clean up its streets: Elderly people who either risk taking severe spills on ice or are unable even leave their houses from fear of taking those spills. Sick people who cannot get to doctors. Women who might go into labor at any minute and find it impossible to get to a hospital and help cannot come to them. In one instance a baby actually DIED. How many ambulances and Hatzalah vehicles got stuck in deep snow? Care to guess a number? (they are numerous.)

Did you also know that the fire department could not respond to emergency calls?

Yes, you laugh at how “silly” it is to complain.

You claim that New Yorkers are complainers. Look at yourself in the mirror. You didn’t have the guts to live in NY yourself so you ran away like a coward to Florida. You didn’t have the guts to go through more snow storms that is why you fled to Florida. It is you who is the big complainer, who complains about others. It says Moshe saw the plight of his brothers and tried to help them. That is what made him so great. But you gloat at the pain of oithers like a sadist. You should learn from Moshe Rabbanu and go out to and help your brothers. Maybe you should take a trip to Siberia and learn to feel the pain of others. I am glad you are in Florida and not in my neighborhood. In my neighborhood people care about others. We in New York don’t want to eat your kind of Cholent. So save the extra meat!

It always snows in Brooklyn – every winter – and the Sanitation Dept. always cleans up within a day so Boro Park taxpayers can get to work on time, our schoolchildren that go and pay for “private schooling” instead of accepting “FREE public schooling” which we are entitled to thru paying taxes. BUT THIS TIME THEY LET US DOWN BIG TIME – THEY WENT ON STRIKE due to the Mayor’s budget cuts.
Boro Park should have their own “snow removal” group just like they have Shomrim patrol the streets and don’t rely on the NYPD. People should pay for this service and DEDUCT it from their taxes as a business expense. That’s the only way to teach the Mayor – hurt him in the pocket.

It is never too late to learn and change. Now that all the above mentioned commenters have opened your eyes to the pain of others I am sure that you regret your comments and that you will learn in the future not to talk the way you did. So please forgive all the above mentioned harsh words but they were all spoken out of concern for you and through the pain they experienced in the snow storm.

I am sure that the many comments that were directed to you has now enlightened you to understand what you did wrong by saying what you did. I hope you forgive all of these harsh statements which were only meant to make you realize what was wrong with what you said. A person can always make a mistake and correct himself which I am sure you have done by now..

You’re whining more than ever. My gosh. People in Buffalo New York deal with more snow than NYC got every single winter. There’s no whining there.

Snow is a fact of life folks. I shoveled my car out back when I was in the frigid north. And shoveled it again when the plows shoved all the snow on top of it again.

But this whining is too much.

And for all the people advising me to say Tehillim because it snowed in NY? Seriously? You make me laugh.

And you want me to do Teshuva because I point out you’re whining? Even better.

With all do respect to all of your points. Mayor Bloomberg is extremely disappointed with the work that has been happening to clear the snow, but we have to remember, he is one man, the mayor yes, but it was the heads of the departments who said, “go at a leisurely pace” in response to the layoff and pay cuts. I lived in Queens and now live out in Nassau County, the snow is just as bad out here, with plows working just as hard as n Borough Park, Crown Heights and in many other places. All that has to be said is it could be worse.

I agree with “number 1”. give the jew a break, hes right, i am in ny and i agree that new yorkers complain like little babies. why should you go around with a camera trying to get everyone to say that they hate bloomberg?
