Silver, an Orthodox Jew, was absent today’s modest inaugural celebrations in Albany in order to observe the Sabbath.

His lack of support of previous tax caps is expected to be a big roadblock to Cuomo, who is trying to push through a 2 percent cap on property taxes. Silver, however, has said he is open to discussing the idea and the cap could be one of the first legislative victories for Cuomo.

    Here’s the Silver release:

On this New Year’s Day, I extend the congratulations and best wishes of the NYS Assembly to Andrew Cuomo on his inauguration as the 56th Governor of the State of New York. We also extend our congratulations and best wishes to Robert Duffy on his inauguration as Lieutenant Governor.

We look forward to hearing Governor Cuomo’s State of the State Address on January 5th, and we begin 2011 ready and willing to work hand-in-hand with the new administration to deal with our fiscal crisis and with the many other challenges that our hardworking families are confronting every day.

This is a proud occasion for the Cuomo and Duffy families and the beginning of a new and more optimistic chapter in the history of our Empire State.

Why do the words Orthodox Jew and Democrat seem like an oxymoron?

I dont understand why Lieberman must pass your “orthodox” test.. He passed the Gay legislation because in the USA the only reason not to allow them in is discrimination. Why can we not praise people for what they do. So he wont get Maftir Yona in your shul.

Shelly’s problem will not be Andrew, but the fourth coming of Mario Cuomo in the background orchestrating his son’s moves. As much as I hated Cuomo I think he’s the only one sharp enough to derail Shelly.
