Cunard’s newest luxury cruise ship, the Queen Elizabeth sailed into her North American homeport at the Pier 88 Manhattan Cruise Terminal this morning.

She is joined by the flagship Queen Mary II and the Queen Victoria.

Later tonight, the ships will sail to the Statue of Liberty for a fireworks celebration.

It’s only the second time in Cunard’s 171-year history that their entire fleet has met in New York at one time.

After her trip to New York, The Queen Elizabeth will embark on a 103-day Maiden World Voyage.

Jaunted, which describes itself as “the pop culture travel guide for globetrotters, business road dogs, and arm chair travellers,” is looking forward to Cunard’s Royal Rendezvous in New York. Their video shows QE2 leaving Manhattan Piers.

They have produced a guide to the best places for New Yorkers to watch the event, and they report that the Empire State Building will be lit up in red to mark the occasion.

The 2008 event has also taught them a lesson. Back then, QE2 was a little late casting its lines and heading down river to join the Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria and by the time it was on station, the heavens had opened and it was pouring with rain. This time around, cold is likely to be more of a weather factor and Jaunted’s advice is to wrap up well. “Wherever you are, be dressed very warmly; this is not a quick event and it will be dark and cold when the fireworks go off.”

Instead of body scans and gropings, looks like the best way to get to Europe at the moment.

I guess if one is a ship buff or lucky enough to be on one of those ships as a passenger it would be exciting.

They have fireworks all summer long in Coney Island, you can watch them in the warmth not now when it’s 12 degrees at night with wind chill.
