After winning an internal battle to become Israel’s top soldier, Maj. Gen. Yoav Galant must now answer the state comptroller’s inquiry into his large plot of land in northern Israel to keep the job. Galant will appear at a hearing next week.

The affair has exposed new infighting among Israel’s top military brass, and dominated media coverage in recent days.

Galant, who led Israel’s 2008-2009 Gaza offensive as head of the military’s Southern Command, is to take over as military chief on Feb. 14.

But depending on the watchdog’s investigation, judicial officials may delay or cancel the appointment
