New York – Sen. Charles Schumer says he’s introducing legislation to expand the circumstances for law enforcement agencies to take DNA samples from people arrested for violent crimes.

The goal is to expand the DNA database to help solve open cases and reduce the rate of false convictions.

In New York, DNA samples can be taken from convicted felons. Those samples are put in a national database and checked against DNA taken from crime scenes of outstanding cases.

The legislation Schumer promoted in Utica would allow DNA to be taken from people arrested for felonies.

The New York Civil Liberties Union opposes the collection of DNA samples from people who have not yet been convicted. Civil liberties groups say that would mean DNA from innocent people could end up in a criminal databank.

…”The New York Civil Liberties Union opposes the collection of DNA samples from people who have not yet been convicted. Civil liberties groups say that would mean DNA from innocent people could end up in a criminal databank.”…

    It’s real simple:

If in the end the person is found innocent, then the Charles Schumer’s law could require it to be deleted from the database or if it’s not deleted and if it’s ever used illegally, the law could punish the prosecution by having them loose the entire case because of this violation of the rules, if it happens.

    BUT

It should be collected from everyone charged because if you say that it should only collected after conviction it’s a catch 22.

How are you going to convict anyone, without having the DNA first, to prove the conviction in the first place?

    #2 ,

They’ve been convicting people of crimes for thousands of years without DNA…

I do not think that anyone, particularly a Jew, should ever think that a government entity of any country, particularly the US, should ever collect people’s DNA!! This is just a bad idea! They always use extra information against innocent people by creeping in with excuses like this…
This is just an excuse to get stupid people to say “hey, that’s a great idea” so they can start a data base of EVERYONE’S DNA!!!!!!

this is ridiculous we now have available tools we never had before and to not take advantage is just plain dumb not only should it be collected but libraried as well for future usage just as finger prints are

    #4 ,

It is a bad idea to give extra power and information to an ever growing, ever encroaching government that admits to keeping files on all of its citizens and to violating the constitution.
There is no argument, all we can do is look at the past actions of the government in order to determine the probable outcome in the future. In the past, our government has always began any unethical policy with a policy that sounds harmless! Take a look at the Patriot Act! Wow it sounded great when it started…but now they’re listening to all of your phone calls, reading all of your emails and texts and threatening you with full body cavity searches at the airport!

Clearly, paranoia rules in HaNavon’s world.

The DNA register of convicted felons, and criminals is certainly worthy of discussion. However, Shumer only has ideas and bloviates for microphones, and cameras. When he comes up with ideas, and legislation, let him put his MOSEY were his mouth is. AND NOT OUR MONEY!
