Queens NY – The NYPD placed 4,000 plainclothes cops on alert yesterday, fearing protests could erupt when a Queens grand jury returns its decision in the slaying of Sean Bell, who was killed in a hail of 50 police bullets, law-enforcement sources said.

“We’re prepared for the worst. If there’s a verdict that causes a protest or unrest that gets out of hand, they want us ready,” a detective said. In addition, the department ordered that large details of uniformed cops be set up to cover at least five likely trouble spots, the sources said.
These include the courthouse where the grand jury is conducting its probe, and the Harlem headquarters of the Rev. Al Sharpton. [NYPost]
