Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appointed Yoram Cohen to replace outgoing director Yuval Diskin.

Netanyahu said Monday, “Yoram was the spearhead of activity in the agency over the past few years.” Netanyahu said Cohen is “a real field man.”

The Shin Bet handles internal security in Israel and the Palestinian areas.

Cohen takes over at a time of tension with the Palestinians, with a sudden escalation in attacks and counterattacks between Israel and Hamas-led Gaza.

He served as deputy under Diskin, who steps down in May after six years at the helm of the agency.

Israeli media said Cohen would be the first Orthodox Jew to hold the position.

He is a true professional and has clearly stated that he will not allow his religious beliefs to interfere with his performance of his intelligence responsibilities.

To #3- According to you, he would only pass muster if he had payyot, a long beard, and wore a black coat, with a large black hat.

    To 1, 3, 4, and 5

I believe all may be mistaken.. Hopefully, the gadol or Rav who advises him recognizes that he possesses the expertise in his area, no different than a radiologist possesses his expertise. Religion dictates that Shabbos must be violated to save lives and the posaik who he asks will advise him in that manner.

I got excited and thought a Haredi black hat had made it this far, but as always the observant Jew in this case refers to another successful Jew from the Modern-Orthodox movements. I guess it’s hard to work in an intelligence agency if your community doesn’t value strong secular education, military service and college education.
