Sosúa Hebrew Language Academy Charter School, which had hoped to open in August 2012, is modeled after Brooklyn’s Hebrew Language Academy Charter School.

While the application has been withdrawn, Dan Gerstein, a spokesman for the Hebrew language school, insisted plans for the new school are moving ahead and that officials hope to resubmit the revised application most likely within the next year, he said.

A similar application for a Hebrew language charter school in Harlem met with some resistance from community and board members.

The Harlem application is proceeding as planned, said Gerstein.

The dual-language school does not offer teaching on Judaism.

this is unfortunate since there are probably many jewish parents in upper Manhattan who are not frum and don’t send their kids to yeshivot but still might want to have an opportunity to teach their children the Hebrew language.
