The Department of Consumer Affairs said information coming in would be compiled and treated as “enforcement tips.”

Inspectors would be dispatched to locations with a pattern of complaints. The agency asked the newly deputized shoppers to tweet reports of violations to @NYCDCA using the hashtag #nickeled&dimed.

Consumer Affairs Commissioner Jonathan Mintz is on the warpath against supermarkets, charging that their compliance rate with city regulations plummeted in the last round of inspections.

This program raises a very important and valid shaylah for yidden. Is there an issue of messirah if you report a violation at a heimeshe market to the Enforcement Division of the Department. If a yid who runs a business is deliberately overcharging or engaging in other forms of consumer fraud, shouldn’t they be arrested and prosecuted? Food costs are already high enough without having a “ganavah surcharge” from the store owner.

This is an excellent idea. While they are at it, they can also report stores that notoriously sell food with expired expiration dates.

I am just trying to understand why can the City of NY charge 18% interest on unpaid taxes and $115 for a parking ticket and $10 every few days for unpaid tickets and the store owner can not gouge.?
We all have a choice to shop some where else if we believe the store is over charging but we can not avoid paying our taxes….

In the Shop Rite supermarket if something rings up higher than the price on the sticker or the shelf, you get it for free.

The store I was shopping at was overcharging me on a lot of items. Quietly, I did not say a word, and went elsewhere, I paid 50^ less on one bottle of grape juice. That is just one example. I spent over $40.00 but everything was cheaper..
