London – Jews Advised to be Careful as Riots Spread Throughout Capital

London – Members of the Jewish community in Stamford Hill and Golders Greens,  two areas of North London, have been advised not to walk alone and to be careful when going to synagogue on the holiday of Tisha B’Av as riots that began Saturday night in the north London neighborhood of Tottenham spread throughout the British capital. The area has gone on high alert

According to reports, large groups of youths are walking through the Jewish area of Golders Green and started to riot.

No synagogues have been reported damaged in the riots, though some Jewish-owned stores have been ransacked, according to the Jewish Chronicle weekly newspaper.

Following warnings from local rabbis and the Shomrim Orthodox security service, most members of the Jewish community stayed away from the riots, according to the British Jewish newspaper. They were advised that they could go to synagogue, however.

One London resident told Arutz Sheva Tuesday afternoon that Jewish businessmen and professionals are not able to travel to nearby offices, where many of their premises have been looted.

She added that the riots have-not reached Stamford Hill – yet. The riots have spread to only a short walk from Stamford Hill, which is home to thousands of orthodox Jews. Police stopped a riot from getting out of hand in Golders Green, another community with a large Jewish population.

Anti-Semitism has been thrown into reports on the riots, with the London Guardian taking pains to point out that several hareidi religious Jews were at one of the riots. The newspaper did not single out any other racial or religious group

How ironic that the riots are taking place on Tisha B’Av.

It’s not “ironic.” It’s quite appropriate that the riots are taking place during the 9 Days/ Hashem is reminding us that we are STILL in golus.

There is world wide outrage at the Guardian because of their singling out Hassidim for mention. There is the implication but not the statement that they were the problem. The Guardian has an official policy of NOT mentioning ethnicity in any instance, clearly violated here.

Very sadly, Fox News showed video of chareidi men involved in the rioting and throwing things at the police.

Did the Guardian mention what the Jews were doing at the riots? I am confused – did the paper say the Jews were rioting too? Were they? Or were the Jews just caught up in the crowds because they were passing by and happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time? What, exactly, does that last paragarph mean?

Oh here we go In London, just as we reach 20 years from the Crown Heigths Riots which lasted 4 days, we got the same in London now going on for 3 days.

Where is “Shoot to Kill” if you riot like this, London Police force should be sued, the Chief should be removed. never say it can’t happen in NY again unless we the people will rise to the occassion and defend our lives and property.

    Don’t rely on Law enforcement

    Shame on you London

The United Kingdom did not have any racial problems, until it permitted immigration of thousands of individuals from its former colonies in Africa, and other areas where it had spheres of influence (i.e. Pakistan). Also, it should be noted that whenever these civil disorders occur, the Jews are always singled out for attack. It happened in the USA in Newark in 1967, and in L.A. in 1992. During the civil disorders in Washington, D.C., in 1968, the U.S. Army had to mount a .50 calibre machine gun by the U.S. Capitol, to prevent mobs, from burning it down.

You can reach the journalist who mention the Jews in the Guardian article by email paul.lewis[at]guardian[dot]co[dot]uk

The article [guardian(dot)co(dot)uk/uk/2011/aug/07/tottenham-riots-peaceful-protest] has now omitted the mention of Jews – see the footnote. I suspect from the name that the author is Jewish. This should be investigated.
Question to #6 – could you provide a reference of that foxnews clip? The BBC showed a group of Jews, but only far from the action and definitely not involved.

How many of us are able to defend ourselves until the police arrive? How many of us have weapons of any sort, or a plan of what to do, should violence come to our block? Are our doors secured against ‘home invasion,’ or can our homes be easily broken into?

More importantly: have we learned that we are really not safe in Galus?

I just saw this quote in the Guardian, so they have not omitted the remark about Jews:

“But families and other local residents representative of the area – black, Asian and white, including some from Tottenham’s Hasidic Jewish community – also gathered to watch and jeer at police.”
