The law established a framework for the direct shipment of wine to consumers. It requires that out-of-state winemakers shipping into New York state be licensed through the State Liquor Authority and follow certain practices during shipment. It sets equivalent shipment requirements for New York state winemakers.

A public hearing in Albany is focusing on compliance, the impact on licensing fees, and tax revenue generated by the wine shipments.

Winemakers and the state Farm Bureau are among those testifying.

The stores are fighting every crack in the law with all their might. This is the only business in NYS, with the exception of professional practices where NYS works with a cartel to allow them to maintain control of their field to the detriment of consumers. A famous wine store in Flatbush tried to have me sign pertition to fight new laws. Their claim was “do you want every ethnic to drive drunk?”. I explained to them that that was not an issue, ethnics get drunk on beer, not chardonnay.

Some of the best vintage (non-Israeli) kosher wines are only available through direct shipment from California and Oregon wineries. Unfortunately, most yidden have never been educated in appreciating good wines and somehow believe that drinking the dreche sweet (concord) wines sold as “kosher wines” is torah moshe m’Sinai. This law provides a vital form of access to some really outstanding kosher wines being crafted on the west coast. Most of them are not readily available in the heimeshe wine and liquor stores in NYC.

What is the problem here? Wine and even liquor is sold in supermarkets all over Michigan and yet the “party stores” (what we call liquor stores here) still stay in business.
