New York, NY – City residents may soon get the exclusive right to park on the streets where they live.

After years of false starts, state and city legislators are seriously looking at a plan to establish residential parking permits in the Big Apple.

Drivers who live in designated neighborhoods and pay for a permit would be the only ones allowed to park in 80 percent of the spots.

The latest push came after Brooklyn residents began complaining that people attending events at the Barclays Center in Prospect Heights, which is set to open next year, would monopolize most of the parking spaces in their neighborhood.

Living in a city where we have numbered permit parking, I really enjoy having it. Don’t knock it until you have tried it. Yes, you have to pay the city, but then you won’t have people parking on your block to get near the train or to some nearby attraction. and it isn’t too expensive. The way we have it is that anyone can park there (excepting alternate side parking days) from 6 am until 5 or 6 pm. Overnight parking is only for residents. Having a guest over? Don’t worry… You can buy a monthly guest pass as well- it comes in the mail and you hang it from the rear-view mirror so it can be used over and over until expiration. Oh, and using your driveways is still of course free- no permits required, so it will free up more spaces as people will use their driveways to avoid paying for a permit.
It works well- there are restaurants near my home and I can never get parking there. Then they extended the neighborhood permit zone and I now have a space right in front of my home. Someone is parked illegally- call the cops (non emergency line) and they get a ticket. A wonderful idea- why is NYC so late on creating this??

There will be too many “what if” situations attached to this idea. People with multiple cars, people who move away, people who just moved in, people who get a car and permits are all used up, people who say paying to park on the block they live on is unfair and won’t pay etc etc etc.. the objections could go on and on…
The city of Philadelphia does give handicapped folks space in front of their residence with signs posted to protect that space…which is an idea I like and think is fair.

Although the idea sounds good on paper, think about it. It basically means you can’t go anywhere. The 20% of visiting spots will always be taken and you cant wait all day for it to open up. ridiculous.

Residents do pay the taxes, so they should be first to park there.
This program works well in Boston and possibly other cities as well.
For everyone else, there’s Municipal Lots that the City maintains and you pay a small fee to park there. The “small fee” isn’t more than what residents pay in taxes.

So instead of getting parking tickets, they can simply give us one big giant one every year. And supplement it with several alternate side violations during the year?

There are times when Federal pre-emption, as much as I hate the idea, starts looking attractive

So let me get this straight. We need to give the city money. If you want to go a restaurant or store that is not next to my house – it will be impossible to get a spot. Just as the handicapped permits I think are totally taking a scam – this too will totally be 1 huge scam. The city is making communities Not welcoming to other communities. This is by far the worst idea the city has come up with.

I live in a city with this and it is a very bad idea. Basically even though I pay the same city taxes, and live in the same city I can not get a permit to park anyplace in the city I want just in my own little area. That means when I drive across the city to the museums, I have to either park at a meter or garage since street parking is restricted to “residents”.

From the perspective of the city it is great they make money on all parking since you have to pay for the permits. In addition visitors have to pay for parking (more taxes). There is no real parking issue but free parking doesn’t make anyone money.

Reb darth zeida, won’t parking further put me in a different neighborhood that I also can’t park in? And why would I buy a car to not use? If you wanna carry my grocery bags home for me, or pay me for the extra 2 hours it would take to get to bay ridge by bus…

and rules are good, but this isn’t a rule yet, and probably will never be because it’s too complicated for an overcrowded tax burdened city

It would be great if something were done for residents to aid them in having parking near home, both AM±. Lived here for 30 years, population has changed and the new pop is abusive about the parking. Our shared driveway partner brought things to a pt where none uses the driveway. He and other neighbors have constructed unauthorized ports They create a tumult if anyone blocks them at any time – but there are few spaces left. If the cops are called or illegal ports reported they go screaming to the Rabbanim of those of us who are abused “MESIRAH”.
AlsoB”H for simchos-but they’ve also constructed several shuls w/party rooms, used both day & night, often with valet parkers – Thus leaving long-standing residents out in the cold/heat. HELP! US FIND A SPACE!

    Foolish!

You need to be able to park your car when you go to the store, visit your friend. what good is the car otherwise? To keep it parked?

Its all about raising fees, and then again and again. On the other hand they get a new source from tickets issued to cars that park in the wrong place. Alternate side parking, it will be a mess.

    Bloomberg’s war on motorist continues.

It works well in Jerusalem. Its basically giving you free “meter parking” but not “parking space” which means during business the permit doesn’t help me at all. Good look americans

Face it – This will be installed in NYC soon. They are not stupid – they do know there will be issues to iron out (multi-dwellings, shopping districts etc) and these are not new problems – there are numerous cities all over the US & the world where this works. Those people with multiple cars who wont get multiple permits, will either store them off the street, or will sell them, or pay for a permanent parking spot.
You have to remember, just because you live in a city and pay taxes, it does not entitle you to park for free! You need to stop thinking you are entitled to and deserve everything but that you need to pay for everything at some point.

We have the best of both worlds, low property tax, access to all, within NYC and ample parking where you live and shop!! Who circles for a spot? No alternate side headaches. The day I moved out of Brooklyn, I became a happy camper….
