The bear has been seen in the Wesley Hills area of Monsey for weeks now, roaming the streets in the daytime and rummaging through garbage cans, looking for food.

Malki Fisher, who lives in the area, says after a bear tried to break into her kitchen on Thursday, she contacted the Ramapo Police Department, and she says they didn’t do anything to help her. Other neighbors agree, complaining nothing is being done to protect anyone, especially children.

Ramapo police say they are aware of the situation, and are advising everyone to stay away from any bears if they see them and to notify the police.

video below taken recently by an Orthodox family in Wesley Hills.

Through Friday, it is bow hunting season for (adult) black bears. Hunting hours are sunrise through sunset. Perhaps someone can find a licensed bow hunter to help with this dilemma.

This country is going down the tubes. They won’t shoot it because they don’t want to hurt it. Who cares about the humans! PETA has won. I think it’s outrageous that they don’t shoot it and making everyone safe. Not only that, but if you shoot it yourself, you can be arrested.

Residents need to follow the local laws as far as putting garbage out on the curb. Most put it out Sunday morning and the law states not to put it out until the morning of collections. No need for garbage to be sitting outside for over 24 hours. Think, people!

The other areas in Rockland abide by the rules. NS and Monsey still refuse to listen. This could save a life!

The fact is that bears should be preserved – but they also must be relocated from residential areas. If indeed there are enough to hunt them humanely, then do so. If not, then let game wardens tranquilize them and send them off to a preserve somewhere way upstate.

Why does the race of the bear matter?

Lets get the facts straight! The bear has been sighted all over Forshay and Wesley Hills. The Police have said many times that unless the bear is up in a tree, they will not come. Why? No clue! The bears were here first! It was us who pushed them and their children out of their homes, not the other way around. The continued building in the Pomona area will only push more wild life into our neighborhoods! Does Daas Torah care about that when screaming that everyone should vote for the Idiot? I dont think so! #3, where do you keep your garbage cans until Tuesday and Friday mornings, in your living room? The law is not to keep it at the curb, or the front of your drive way. These bears have been all over the property! It is a catch 22. You cant kill them on your own, although, doing that will surely bring the Police running! You cant call the Police unless its up a tree! And with CSL assured to be around for another few years, Patric Farms will now dissapear and more animals will come flowing out!

“Ramapo police say they are aware of the situation, and are advising everyone to stay away from any bears if they see them and to notify the police.”

Wow! What a competent police department. I thought they would at least say that they are trying to get a hold on the situation, instead all they had to say is to stay away from the bears – indeed very important advice!

    P. S. That footage is really terrifying. I hope nobody gets hurt.

I live in Monsey and I say, “Let’s finish the job already. Cut down all the trees, down zone every neighborhood to multi- family, build out to every curb, pour concrete over every blade of grass. and kill all the animals.”

Ahh, that’s what I call a fine heimisher Torah community. right? right?

According to halacha we have every right to displace any species and to deal with it as need be. Indeed, our need for 2 story homes and running water trumps any rights that a bear has to roam on settled land. However, bear removal must be done humanely, and a nature preserve for bears would also be a great tourist attraction so long as it is in a wooded area upstate.

At the summer community in the Catskills we had a bear problem, with the bears trying to get into the garbage shed. Camphor based air fresheners were placed in the shed and the bears never again tried to break in. On the plus side it worked, on the negative side Camphor can be dangerous and must be used with caution.

Living near that area and waiting at the corner at 530 for a 7 year old who will not be dropped off by my house because it is too hard for the school district to do that and no lights before viola I should call 911 when I see a bear? Good idea

To 6, 8 and 13. I wonder in your insensitive childish comments would be the same if YOU had these bears visiting your property every night. My 4 year old went out at 6pm the other night just to grab a ball. When I went outsuide maybe 10 minutes later I noticed my garbage cans turned upside down with my garbage spread all over the driveway. My son missed the bear by about 2 minutes. Not sure if you have kids of your own (certainly does not sound it from the comments) but save your stupid comments about preserving wildlife over preserving our children’s safety for another time. And no, hunting once year is not the same as having your family harrased by theses creatures on daily basis. The Police dept I guess is just waiting for something to happen and then take action. We’ve had bears in the past but it has never been even close to what is happening now.

If the animals are coming to where people live, it is a MAJOR SAKONA & the animals have to be removed in any way possible. Talking to the animals won’t work (sorry libs!) so they have to be removed in a better more permanent manner.

No. 6 – my sentiments exactly.
    No.12 – I don’t find the footage terrifying, I find it fascinating.
    No. 17 – Love it!!

I live in NJ where we see bears on our lawn several times a week in the summer. You can give your kids whistles for when they are outside, bears are scared of noise. There is no such thing as a bear proof garbage can, we have tried them all. Now I pour amonnia over the garbage and only put it out on the morning of pick up. So far that has worked.

Face it, Monsey. You are going to live with bears. Too much of their habitat has been taken for development.

Yes, it ought to be done. Or are those of you who prefer bears to Yidden the same as Paroi who said “pen yirbu?” Bears don’t belong near children. They’re fascinating to watch from a car in a nature preserve, and there is plenty of food for them in any forest in the Adirondacks. Relocating and properly managing the bears brings in revenue. Stopping construction just moves the problem a little further away and keeps revenue down.

Jewish communities grow fast BE”H and we need more room. We can’t and should not displace other humans (except through fair purchase of housing), so we have to build where there was nothing before.

All this bear nonsense is in any case because of poor conservation methods and PETA types. Bears never wandered as close to civilization as they do now.

Halacha makes it clear that man has FULL dominion over animals so long as there is no hunting for sport or tzar baalei chaim. That’s the bottom line.

    Berel, fort avek!

Terrifying? A bear knocking over a garbage can at night is terrifying? You’re kidding, right? By the way,… why does that silver suv seem to be parked in the middle of the street?

The problem is the anti-hunting lobby have taken over the PC United States with the result being what it is.

Hunting laws are there to cull the herd..Its humane and needs to be updated as the population moves away from the urban sprawl.

Of course in PC NEW YORK where having a brain seems to be a terminal illness, nothing will be done till such time that a person is killed..G-d Forbid.

DEC is sending a bear biologist tomorrow – Ramapo Police are doing a reverse 911 to the area today to remind people to keep garbage locked up. Let’s work TOGETHER as a community to address this issue.. All concerned residents should come to a Board Meeting, next Tuesday, November 22, 7pm Wesley Hills Village Hall, 432 Route 306. We urge everyone to have at least one member per household attend this meeting so that can ensure a turnout that will encourage the Village to get involved in protecting our children and our neighborhood.

Wesley Hills is a village. Monsey is a village. They are not one in the same. If you live in Monsey your zip is 10952, if you live in parts of Wesley Hills, you can have 10901. I had a bear sighting on my premises and the police told me, don’t worry the bear is more afraid of you. We have come face to face with the black bear time and time again. Guess what, I have a shot gun and if I need to use it I will. Sorry PETA.

Best thing if you live in a secluded area and a bear shows up is shoot it. If you fear your gunshots will be heard then use a bow arrow. I’m glad I live in Brooklyn.
