Religious institutions are among the organizations contacted by the Department of Finance which is looking to collect taxes on properties that do not have protected tax-exempt status.

In July, 13,000 notices were sent out, but only 47 percent of non-profit organizations responded.

City Council members have been asked to contact non-profits in their districts and inform them about today’s deadline.

Some of them say this is the first they’ve heard of it.

“I founded a community garden. They sent it to the garden. Nobody’s there. They sent it to schools and all kinds of organizations, so it’s not just religious organizations,” said City Councilwoman Gale Brewer.

Some groups argue the city is being heavy handed with organizations that exist to help the community.

“Somehow to do a blanket thing and say if you’re not in by December 5th you’re toast. I just find it troubling,” said John Gingrich of Good Shepherd-Faith Church.

Non-profits that do not submit applications for their properties today will not receive a tax exemption in the next fiscal year.

Brooklyn, Councilman David G. Greenfield is urging non-profit organizations to fill out their property tax exemption forms in order to avoid facing property tax bills in 2012.

“When people don’t recognize a mailing they tend to ignore it. That’s why I am calling every group in my district that has not yet replied to the Department of Finance. However, there are many more groups throughout New York City that stand to lose tens of thousands of dollars in property tax exemptions.” Greenfield added that a small percentage of groups may have moved and not even received those notices from the DOF.

Those groups are encouraged to correct their address on-line at: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dof/html/property/property_info_registration.shtml.
